Rubbish Recycling

A serious post today, about recent happenings in the rubbish and recycling world. We were interested to read this story about a waste company being fined for shipping mixed waste abroad.

Although it’s something we try to avoid at all costs at The Laundry, it is legal to send sorted waste abroad for recycling; however big vats of rubbish are thankfully a no no. It seems the intentions were pure and the waste was collected for recycling; however due to contamination (empty juice bottles leaking on the old letters, old yoghurt pots splurging over magazines and the such like) there was a certain amount that couldn’t be recycled and somehow ended up being sent abroad under the guise of recycling.

The moral of this story is, always separate your recycling! Ok, it’s a tiny bit more effort, but it makes such a difference - as we pick up your paper in nice yoghurt and juice free bags, we can recycle 100% of what we collect, and in the UK too.
