Score Blimey

Well done Steph for a completely bonkers blog last week, I loved it.

This week I’ve been thinking about scores to films. I pondered to my friend that:

There are no films with good soundtracks any more, my number one favourite is Back to the Future, deeer deeeer deeeer, di di di di di der, (hold on, I can’t do this the whole way through the email, I’m going to get our IT specialist to help me record my dum di dums and post it on the blog, wish me luck with that). With the possible exception of Jurassic Park, rousing (that’s rousing without the a, naughty) scores died out in the 80s.

Have you noticed that it is impossible to sing the theme tunes to Indiana Jones, Superman and Star Wars in succession? Try it, it can’t be done. Remember two, but the third one will always slip your mind.

So my friend told me the reason for the disappointment and the confusion this is because all the above tunes were written by the same man and he doesn’t write anymore!! Is this true? Let us inspect…

Alan Silvestri

Back to the Future theme! He was Oscar nominated for the theme to Forest Gump, also worked on Cast Away and the Polar Express (ah ha, Tom Hanks, another thing that stopped being good after the 80s).*

John Towner Williams

He did write Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Indiana Jones and Superman!!! Hooray.

He also did Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Schindler’s List, and Harry Potter, wow this man is a genius…..with a “unique style” or is it problems with originality, sorry John, I didn’t mean in, dum dum diddle dum dum, which one is that?

I love it when things all add up and the good thing is that John is still writing.

Which are your favourites?

Can I have West Side Story? Even though it was a musical first? The music as everyone knows was by Leonard Bernstein, who was, of course a genius. No one writes popular music in time signatures other than 4/4 anymore, but West Side Story had a full orchestra and jazz!

Yes of course, West Side story is my favourite musical of all time, it’s got everything, great plot, amazing music and award winning choreography by Jerome Robins, yes!

Not forgetting good old Gershwin. Mind you, Jonny Greenwood’s soundtrack for “There Will Be Blood” wouldn’t be out of place alongside Cage & Reich so it’s not all bad. That’s not really in the same vein as dum-dee-dahhhh superman! mind.
